In the past, whenever I heard the word "networking" or was invited to a "networking event'", I would just cringe with the thought of spending time in a big hotel room full of strangers with phony smiles and a hand full of business cards I didn't want. Images of cheesy folks in cheap business suits, all trying to sell me something filled my head. I also didn't understand the real meaning and purpose of networking. Can you relate? Have you ever felt that way about networking groups? Have you ever thought about joining one? Or..are you one of those sistas that don't see the real significance in joining these kinds of business groups?

Of Course, these limiting beliefs no longer rule in my mind because I've since joined a professional networking group and I've attended my share of amazing networking events.

I remember the day a few years ago when a good friend of mine invited me to attend her weekly networking group meeting. I almost stopped myself because of my ridiculous and limited beliefs about what network groups and meetings were all about, instead I decided to go with her...I am so glad that I did.

Today, I would like to share with you 5 good reasons why I recommend you visit and join a networking group in your area.

Here's 5 Reasons Why "I Think" Black Women Should Join A Local Professional Business Networking Group:

  1. No matter how many friends and family members you have today, it's always a great idea to meet others outside of your normal circle. Network group and events will allow you to step out of your norm and meet some people that you probably would never have met in your "usual" crowd, circle or group.
  2. You will be with like-minded individuals that will be open to hearing about your product or service. Not everyone may be interested, but the good news is people will expect you to share what you are all about. Networking meetings and groups are all about sharing your business, products, services and asking for referrals.
  3. Chances are, if you have a good product or service YOU WILL GET NEW BUSINESS!! That is always nice!
  4. You will meet other business people that want to help you succeed. This is the nature of networking groups, people helping each other succeed. Note: There is more commitment within a networking group because you have the opportunity to build relationships with other members. Attending occasional networking events are good, but don't expect to form strong business bonds all within a 1 hour. Be sure to follow up after the event in order to build a rapport that may lead to business together.
  5. You will create a pipeline for referrals! Most professional networking groups encourage and even require members to give each other referrals. The each member of the group acts as a referral agent for other members. For example, whenever I speak with someone that is looking to buy a house, needs their computer worked on, wants to have a website built...I refer them to the members in my group that are in that business. I feel confident with those referrals because I've grown to know and trust the members in my group. That is the beauty of joining a networking group over just attending occasional events.
  6.  BONUS: Black women are natural born networkers! We love the faith AND social aspect of church, the sisterhood of our sorority and it's always a good time when we get together with our girls! We also recommend and refer often. Think about it...chances are you were referred to your hair stylist, your nail technician and maybe even the last good movie you watched! The point is we network all the time, now you can take those natural skills and abilities and build your business by joining a networking group!

Most networking groups will allow you to visit as a guest several times before you join, so take your time and visit a few. There are networking groups that are exclusive with only one member per chapter, per profession and also groups that are more open with many members in the same profession. It is really a matter of preference, if you like being the only one in your profession..go exclusive. Many of the exclusive groups have an annual fee to join, so be sure to ask. There are also many FREE groups to join....just look around and join the one that fits you the best!

Are you a member of a network group? Do you think networking groups or events are a waste of time? Are you happy with the results you get from networking?

Please share your comments and experience.

Happy networking!!
